KATHMANDU: The businessmen are protesting because the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is attempting to evict street vendors.

On Sunday, small businesspeople operating street commerce gathered and marched in Kathmandu against the Metropolitan City’s decision.

Businessmen who do business on bicycles, carts, and footpaths, as well as some ordinary people, have begun to complain that Kathmandu Metropolitan City is attempting to forcibly transfer them.

According to Subin Mulmi, a legal practitioner involved in the businessmen’s movement, the Kathmandu metropolitan does not allow street vendors to work.

He claimed that businessmen illegally took the city’s goods, which should be legally administered. He stated that street dealing is not against the law. They accused the city of making money by illegally auctioning off businessmen’s goods.

Mulmi said, ‘There is no situation where street traders are allowed to eat. Their goods have been confiscated illegally and auctioned. We have come to request that the street business be managed legally. Street trading is not prohibited by law. The law says that it should be done with permission or registration.

However, no provision has been made for obtaining permission. That is in the law of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City. Municipalities cannot take away goods like that. No law has been written into the law. The Garbage Management Act is attached, the Local Government Act is attached, it is not written in both. Illegally taking away their belongings and auctioning them to earn money. All that is illegal. To oppose it, the poor people, who have no means or alternatives, have been running street peddling. That should be managed. A system should be made to give permission by keeping the work schedule. Arrangements should be made to feed them. Mayor Balendra Shah should be serious in managing the street business. ‘

Businessmen say that the city is for everyone or only for the rich?

They protested with slogans.
