An awareness rally has been held in Bharatpur on the occasion of World Environment Day.
The awareness rally was organized by the Saptagandaki Environmental Science Club and with the support of Saptagandaki Campus Science Department. Environmental science students and professors participated in the rally.
The rally started from Saptagandaki multipurpose campus and passed through the old medical college, Bharatpur hospital, district police office and reached Chaubiskothi and ended at the campus itself. In the rally, the students said ‘don’t use plastic items’, ‘keep the environment clean and tidy’ and ‘let’s reduce air pollution’. They were carrying placards with such slogans.
On the occasion of Environment Day, Saptagandaki Campus Managing Committee Chairman Tek Bahadur Thapa inaugurated a botanical garden with a waterfall and a pond in the campus premises. Similarly, Dhruv Acharya, assistant professor of environmental science, informed about the ‘impact of plastic’ in the program. He said that the use of plastic is increasing all over the country, including Chitwan, and opined that plastic pollutes the environment and soil. He said, “Due to the pollution of the environment due to plastic, health problems such as breathing, asthma and cough have been observed. It has played an important role in mitigating climate change. Annual collection of 300 metric tons of plastic waste in Nepal is a matter of concern. When plastic is thrown into the river, it is poisoning the sea creatures and even the salt we eat.’ Acharya said that according to Nepal’s law, plastic below 40 microns should be banned in order to prevent this.
In the program presided over by Sugam Dhital, President of Environmental Science Club, Maniraj Mahato, Campus Head of Saptagandaki Multiple Campus, Narayan Prasad Regmi, Chairman of Professors Association and Raviraj Subedi, Head of Science Department informed about the importance and purpose of the program. They thought that such programs should be conducted at the community level.
